Teachers

Jeanne Mattis Jeanne Mattis
Jeanne is the Owner and Director of the Design In Motion Dance Studio located in Gambrills Maryland.  She has been teaching dance for the past 15 years in the Anne Arundel County area.  She was accepted to the School of Performing Arts in Baltimore and held a full dance scholarship at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  She held a certification from SHRM - Society For Human Resource Management, as a Human Resource Professional. After working 15 years at the NASA Federal Credit Union, she left the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources position, to pursue business ownership. Jeanne has built the Design In Motion Dance Studio and Student Dance Company philosophies on service and community outreach.  Jeanne directs an annual community performance, which is hosted by her studio’s student dance company, to benefit a different charity each year. She is very proud of the commitment these young students give to helping others. Jeanne enjoys spending time with her husband, Karl and son, Norman. 
     
Serene Webber
Serene is the Manager for Design In Motion Dance Studio. Serene is a CMA (Certified Laban Movement Analyst). She has applied her Movement Analysis training in her dance teaching and choreography, dance teaching of young children with Autism and language delays, and teaching adults with Parkinson's Disease. Serene was a double major in Psychology and Dance Performance and graduated with her B.F.A from Towson University. She has been teaching in Anne Arundel County, Howard County and Baltimore City for the past 18 years and has been a guest choreographer for the Anne Arundel County Public Schools for the past 7 years. Serene also enjoys performing and choreographing as a guest artist with various companies in the Washington DC and Baltimore area. Besides dancing, Serene loves spending time with her husband, daughter and son.
     
Kristin Brown

Kristen Brown-Maki
Kristin Brown-Maki grew up in Tampa Florida, where she was a graduate of Howard W. Blake High School of the Performing Arts. She received her early training around Central Florida before joining the Florida Dance Theatre (formerly the Lakeland Ballet). She was the Donald Bryd/Ruth Eckerd Hall Dance Scholarship recipient, the First Place winner at the National Society of Arts and the Letter Ballet Career Competition, and was recognized as a merit Award recipient from the National Endowment of the Arts. Kristin continued her dance education on scholarship at the University of South Florida working towards her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance Performance. She has danced professionally with the Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Brandon Ballet, United Nations of Dance, THINK Dance Company, and Bowen McCauley Dance. Kristin taught extensively in the Tampa area for three years before relocating to Maryland where she has continued to teach at Design in Motion Dance Studio and other local schools.

Megan  

Megan Andritz Murphy
Megan Andritz Murphy received her BA in Musical Theatre from James Madison University with an education emphasis. She has trained at HB Studios, TVI Actor’s Studio and the Broadway Dance Center. For the last twelve years, Megan has performed in Equity, regional, and summer stock theatres. She performed as a singer and dancer at Busch Gardens, Hershey Park and Walt Disney Entertainment. She has also traveled the world with Norwegian and Commodore Cruise Lines. Megan was cast in five TV/Film spots and has worked as a spokes model for over fifteen clients including FAO Schwartz, Lean Cuisine, and Johnson and Johnson. Megan enjoys teaching the performing arts and choreographing and directing numerous productions for professional theatres, children’s theatres and public schools. Megan is the founder and owner of Curtainup4kids.

 

Jodi Adkins
Jodi began dancing at the age of 5. She attended Point Park College in Pittsburgh where she studied dance and musical theatre. She recently had the opportunity to travel Europe as Patty Simcox in the musical Grease. While living in New York, Jodi performed all ­over the country doing numerous shows. Some favorites include: Cabaret, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Chicago, Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story, 42nd St., Thoroughly Modern Millie, Singing in the Rain, Candide, Hello Dolly, Anything Goes and A Christmas Carol with Tony Award winning choreographer Rob Ashford. Along with performing, Jodi’s choreography credits include: Meet Me in St. Louis, Swing, 42nd St., Cinderella, Singing in the Rain and Oliver. She has taught and judged all over the country for NYLA dance and Beyond the Stars competitions.  Jodi is also a member of the YouTube sensation Spangles dance company and a proud member of Actors Equity Association.

 
Allie Allie Hitt
Allie has been competitively performing since the age of six. She began her training at Mid- Atlantic Center for the Performing Arts and later continued at Dance Explosion. She has won various high scores, titles, awards and scholarships throughout the US in jazz, lyrical, ballet and contemporary. Her solo placed in the top ten for Youth American Grand Prix and her studio placed in the top twenty for Jazz Dance World Congress. Allie is a graduate of Baltimore School for the Arts where she trained in classical ballet and modern. At the age of 16, Allie was given the opportunity to be an extra in the movie Step Up. She also attended The Boston Conservatory and was awarded The Jan Veen Scholarship. Throughout her dance career, she has been able to travel all over the country and Europe to train with professionals. Some include Desmond Richardson, Dwight Rhoden Michele Assaf, Joe Lanteri, Mia Michaels, Denise Pons Leone and many more. Currently, Allie is a member of Common Ground Dance Company and pursing a career in Nursing.
 
Joseph

Joseph Webb
Joseph Monroe Webb is an international award winning dancer, choreographer, actor, educator and poet who has showcased his talents in a number of performances throughout the years including the Tony Award winning Broadway production, Bring in 'Da Noise Bring in 'Da Funk with notable tap dancer, Savion Glover. Following his Broadway success, Webb ventured into acting an appearance in the Martin Scorsese film Bringing Out The Dead, and appeared in numerous print and television ads. He has also performed on talk shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Live with Regis and Kathy Lee. He also was a special guest artist at the 25th Anniversary of Gala Des Etoiles Dance Gala in Montreal Canada in September 2008. Most recently Mr. Webb and his band were apart of the Red Hook Festival in Brooklyn, NY. He has been a guest teacher and performer at the D.C. and L.A. Tap Festivals and a special guest artist at Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware and executed a stellar performance at the Tap City Concert in NYC which was reviewed by the New York Times. He was a featured dancer in the cast of Thank You Gregory, which toured the United States. His most recent appearances include Tap Stars (Hamburg, Germany) and in the Cotton Club Parade with Wynton Marsalis. Understanding that his talent and achievements are attributed to more than his commitment and contribution to the journey, Webb gives thanks to the Most High for all his blessings. He is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, one of the National Foundation For Advancement in the Arts Level I awardees, and a Presidential Scholar. Joseph is a 2001 graduate of Marymount Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater Arts. Mr. Webb was a Full Time Lecturer at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY for 8 years, and was on the staff of Harlem School of the Arts for seven years. For more than five years Mr. Webb was a teaching artist at Young Audiences of New York where he taught creative movement, theatre and tap dance to New York public school students in grades 1-12.

Julie Muller Stahl
Julie Muller Stahl began her dance training at the Princeton Ballet School, School of American Ballet and Burklyn Ballet Theater. Her training in the Vaganova Method came under the direction of the late Marika Besobrasova (L’Academie de Danse Classique de Princess Grace), Elena Kunikova (Kirov Ballet), and Elisabeth Carroll (Harkness Ballet). As a young dancer, she was also trained in the modern dance techniques of Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Paul Sanasardo and Jennifer Muller. After receiving a BS in Dance and English from Skidmore College, Ms. Stahl joined Hubbard Street Dance Company in 1990 and shortly thereafter moved on to dance with FELD Ballets/NY and Twyla Tharp Dance Company. Performing and touring throughout the world, she has performed a diverse repertoire, from full-length ballets to works by Balanchine, Agnes DeMille, Ji?í Kylián, and Daniel Ezralow among others in addition original works by choreographers Elliot Feld and Twyla Tharp. Ms. Stahl has been as a guest artist with the New York City Opera and several regional dance companies. Ms. Stahl continued to dance professionally until 2000 when she began teaching in the New York Metropolitan area while pursuing a career in Marketing and Design. She is an ABT® (American Ballet Theater) Certified Teacher who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. Ms. Stahl has taught on the faculty of The Washington Ballet School, Ballet Royale in Columbia County and Towson University Community Dance Program.

 
Marissa Marissa Guerrero Elliott
Marissa D. Guerrero Elliott is a local dance artist and educator in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. She is currently an adjunct faculty member with Towson University, where she teaches Dance History and Jazz Technique.  In addition to her position with Towson University, Marissa is currently an arts administrator to the Maryland Youth Ballet. She has served as a faculty member at the Kinetics Dance Theatre in Ellicott City, MD and as an adjunct faculty member, as well as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, at the University of Maryland, College Park where she taught Jazz and Modern technique classes. Marissa has performed professionally with the Arts United of Washington, Jeslyn Dance Gallery, Next Reflex Dance Collective, Gesel Mason Performance Projects, NY2 Dance Company, and VT Dance.  Marissa performed works by Lionel Popkin, Mark Haim, Dianne McIntyre, Monica Bill Barnes, Nejla Yatkin, Vincent Thomas, and Alvin Mayes. Before moving to the Washington D.C. area, Marissa earned a B.F.A. in choreography and performance from the Ohio University, Athens in 2001. She received her M.F.A, in choreography from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2008.
 

Facility
Design In Motion Dance Studio offers two large 30 x 40 studios with high ceilings. We are proud of our studio and your assistance is requested in the following areas. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the building. Our hope is to offer a comfortable waiting area and siblings are welcome to watch through our studio windows. We ask that you take care in supervising your children and help us to keep the studio clean by picking up after yourself. Parents are responsible for their child's behavior and any damage incurred by their children, enrolled or otherwise visiting. Employees only are allowed in the office area.

Studios
No food, gum or drinks are allowed in either of our studios. Water bottles with lids are permitted. Only dance shoes are allowed on the studio floors. This applies to family members. Students are asked not to hang on the barres or touch the mirrors.

Staff, Dancers, Parents & Visitors
It is our hope that you have a positive experience at our studio. Dancing is an opportunity to emote joy and good energy. Allow yourself the opportunity to participate fully in the joy of dancing. It is essential that we respect each other. Proper behavior, positive talk and following the rules of our studio ensure our goals are met. If you have any concerns I ask that you share them with the appropriate staff that can assist in getting them resolved. Our owners and manager are always willing to help with any questions, comments or concerns you may have as a parent or a student.
